The Explore 4 Gift Pack “Piedmont Beyond Nebbiolo” (750mL)

“Beyond its world-famous Nebbiolo grape, Italy’s Piedmont region is home to an unrivaled trove of delicious alternatives. There are many distinctive varieties that grow only in Piedmont, making it a region ripe for exploration.”

Grow your wine knowledge and drink well while doing it: That’s the idea behind “Explore 4,” our most popular monthly club. Here’s a chance to check it out—no commitment required!

“Explore 4” surveys the vast landscape of wine and breaks it into small, digestible bites. Each month, we select four bottles that fit a theme, allowing members to experience a diversity of styles while developing their own palate preferences. It’s an ongoing exploration of wine through a sommelier’s eyes and there’s no more effective, and enjoyable, way to learn about wine.

In this edition of the Explore 4, offered as a one-time purchase, we head to Italy’s Piedmont region for a look at the many delicious wines from grapes other than Nebbiolo. Piedmont really is a wine “nation” unto itself, producing world-class renditions of every type of wine imaginable: red, white, sparkling, sweet…you name it!

Here’s what’s in the box, which includes a full-color booklet that explains the theme and the wines in vivid detail:

The Region: Roero DOCG
The Wine: Angelo Negro, Roero Arneis “Serra Lupini” 2020

Arneis is a favorite of bees and birds, thanks to its sweet, honeyed juice. But there’s no sweetness here; it’s a dry, appealingly fleshy white with brisk acidity and aromas of pear, white peach, acacia blossoms, and a hint of chopped almond. Pair with chicken or lighter pork dishes, as well as meaty seafood like halibut or turbot.

The Region: Agliano Terme, Asti Province
The Wine: Agostino Pavia, Grignolino d’Asti 2020

Give this a nice chill (even refrigerator temp is okay), pour into a Burgundy stem, and enjoy this wine’s bright spicy perfume: notes of wild strawberry, white cherry, rhubarb, white and black pepper, wild herbs, and underbrush. Light-bodied and refreshingly taut, this is a food wine extraordinaire, terrific with cured meats and cheeses, pizza, and light, tomato-sauced pastas.

The Region: Barbaresco, Alba Province
The Wine: DeForville, Dolcetto d’Alba 2019

Dolcetto leans toward the “purple” end of the red wine spectrum in terms of color and flavor. Deep ruby, with romas of black plum, blackberry, blueberry, violet, licorice, dark chocolate, and crushed stones. It is ripe, fragrant, and dry, finishing with the iron-rich minerality of a fuller-bodied Cru Beaujolais. All the wine you need for a grilled steak or burger!

The Region: Agliano Terme, Asti Province
The Wine: Vietti, Barbera d’Asti “Tre Vigne” 2019

This is a big-boned edition of “Tre Vigne,” full of saturated red and black fruit, a hint of toasty oak, and lots of earth. Dense garnet red in color, it gives off heady aromas of Bing cherry, red currant, black plum, coffee grounds, dark chocolate, and loamy earth. Gutsy, medium-plus in body, and approaching Nebbiolo complexity. Serve with wine-braised meats.
